Who we are

Kooroo, meaning ‘to be proud’ in Amharic, is an African designer brand, established in 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya. Kooroo is the embodiment of an affordable luxury, slow fashion brand which celebrates its unique African heritage.

The brand draws its inspiration largely from the wonders of nature and the beauty of culture. Its clothes are understated and yet decadent, with a focus on exceptional fabrics, and timeless silhouettes.

Eleven years after its establishment, Kooroo shifted its strategy and committed to creating clothing made from natural and biodegradable materials which do not compromise the needs of future generations.

Above all else, Kooroo is devoted to the betterment of Africa and her people, employing local women and artisans in the region, providing gainful employment, fair living wages, and the opportunity for skill development.

Hebret Lakew

Hebret is the owner and chief Designer At Kooroo, a contemporary fashion brand based in Nairobi, Kenya. With more than 30 years of experience under her belt, she has worked in various aspects of the fashion industry both in North America and presently in Africa.

A graduate of the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) of New York, Hebret has acquired a passion for designing women’s garments that are elegant and modern, while celebrating the beauty of her culture.

Her work takes a thoughtful approach to fashion, one which is slow, regenerative, earth conscious, and sustainable. In the past few years, Hebret has been formally teaching and mentoring young up-and-coming fashion designers across the East Africa region.
